First the Prize, Then the Chair
Five years after becoming the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, Selma Lagerlöf took her seat in the Swedish Academy—also as its first female member. She was thus honoured by the institution in 1909 and then became part of it in 1914, when the Academy still had no female members.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940), the famous Swedish author and Nobel laureate in literature.

The photograph was taken by Henry B. Goodwin who was a pioneer in portrait photography in Scandinavia and also a strong proponent of pictorialism. 

The portrait was created in 1909, an important year because it was the time when Lagerlöf became a doctor of philosophy at Uppsala University, which explains the formal and academic attire in the photograph.
