It Was First Called Summer Night
Munch initially gave the painting the title Summer Night. It marked the beginning of a motif he returned to for decades: between 1901 and 1930 he painted seven versions, as well as closely related variations. Åsgårdstrand became a visual laboratory for him rather than merely a summer place.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Pikene på Broen , or The Girls on the Bridge , by the iconic Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The work was painted in 1901 and depicts some girls on a bridge in Munch's summer town, the small town of Åsgårdstrand in Norway.

Edvard Munch is Norway's foremost artist and became a source of inspiration for German Expressionism. Munch's works are inspired by existential themes such as melancholy, jealousy and anxiety, but also the Norwegian nature and places where he lived.

If you order from Norway, your order will be delivered with Fedex; to Sweden and the rest of the world with DHL. Your package is normally delivered to your nearest pickup point!
