Santa as Satire
On 11 December 1912, the image appeared on the cover of the American satirical magazine Puck, drawn by Will Crawford. It was printed with the caption “As Santa Claus looks to some of us” – and is today catalogued, among other subjects, under crime, robbery and commercialism.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a slightly more controversial Christmas motif from the year 1912 by the American illustrator Will Crawford.

The image shows a Santa who appears to have robbed a store of some sort for valuables that he holds in a bag in his left hand, and in the other he points a gun at the viewer.

The picture can be interpreted as a critical stance towards Christmas and the consumerism that some feel comes with the holidays.
