When March Was Unreliable
Beskow’s March was also a little weather forecast in rhyme: the month lures children outdoors with anemones and thaw, only to tuck them into snow. The original was painted in gouache and became one of twelve monthly images in Årets saga, first published in 1927.

The story behind the motif

A classic poster illustrated by Elsa Beskow. The illustration was published in Saga of the year in 1927 and named March.

Årets Saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month. It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.

In the book it says: Mars with his long beard lures the children out of the wall, lures little chicks with dew and then embeds them in snow. He is stern when he is young, harsh as the king of winter himself, but he thaws out in the end, before his hourglass has run out. Swinging then so gentle and smooth, the little ones pee on the willow branch and hum: "my kitty miss, keep yourself beautiful in your skin, stuck on tough ditches and with scales on your bare legs, laughing in rows stand little tussilago sisters!

Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
