From Lottery to Art Dealer
Edelfelt began the painting in Paris in January 1887, intending to donate it to a lottery. When it turned out unusually well, he changed his mind, exhibited it at the Cercle de Mirlitons and sold it for 1,500 francs to Goupil & Cie. In a letter, he noted that several others also wanted to buy it.

The story behind the motif

Poster with painting by the internationally known Finnish artist Albert Edelfelt from 1887 and the realism movement. The painting shows the importance of the handwritten letter and the writing place in the bourgeois home. On the table, the glass inkhorn is open and it seems as if the woman is answering a letter she has just opened, taking care not to keep the sender waiting. A technically exquisite detail in the image is the envelope she is holding in her hand, or more precisely how it is illuminated and becomes transparent.
