Rue Lafayette

In the second half of the 19th century, Paris underwent major urban changes. Old buildings and blocks were demolished in favor of large avenues and boulevards. These quickly became an important part of the city's visual identity and popular motifs among many of the leading artists of the time who were interested in depicting modern life in the big city.

In the spring of 1891, Munch lived at 49 Rue Lafayette in Paris. It is probably the view from his room that he has used as a starting point. On the left are Rue Drouot and Rue Faubourg-Montmartre. The impression of the lively, pulsating life on the street contrasts with the dark figure on the balcony.

Edvard Munch became one of the most famous artists of our time and a source of inspiration for German Expressionism. Munch's works are inspired by existential themes such as melancholy, jealousy and anxiety, but also the Norwegian nature and places where he lived.
