The family behind the fairy tale
The three aunts probably had real-life models. Elsa Beskow’s unmarried aunts and her uncle are usually identified as the models for the aunts and Uncle Blue—a family circle transformed into one of Swedish children’s literature’s most enduring fairy-tale ensembles.

The story behind the motif

A beautiful illustration from Elsa Beskow's children's book series "Aunt Green, Aunt Brown and Aunt Gredelin", which was first published in 1939.

The illustration shows a scene where Uncle Blue and Aunt Brown are standing in a kitchen. Aunt Brown looks both sad and upset, while Uncle Blue tries to comfort her with a kind gesture. The surroundings are warm and homely, with a fireplace that spreads warmth and a bookshelf filled with kitchen utensils that gives the room a sense of charming everydayness.

Elsa Beskow released three books in the series "Aunt Grön, Aunt Brun and Aunt Gredelin". The first book was published in 1939 and introduced readers to the three aunts and their personalities. Aunt Green is the calm and down-to-earth one, Aunt Brown is energetic with a temperament, and Aunt Gredelin is the emotional and imaginative one. Together, they create a dynamic that is both fun and educational for the children who follow their adventures.

The series about Aunt Grön, Aunt Brun and Aunt Gredelin continues to inspire and delight new generations, and it remains an important part of Swedish children's literature.
