Across the Atlantic Almost at Once
Pissarro sold the painting in Paris as early as 18 October 1890, the same year in which it was dated. Just over a year later, on 23 November 1891, it had been resold in New York—a small piece of Impressionism that quickly became part of the international art trade.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the fantastic painting Charing Cross Bridge, London of Camille Pissarro from 1890.

The motif of the painting is of Charing Cross Bridge, which crosses the River Thames in London and is located between Waterloo Bridge and Westminster Bridge. In the picture we see the bridge that stretches from side to side and several ferry boats that transport passengers across the river.

Pissarro was a French impressionist painter. He was born on Saint Thomas where his father, a wealthy Dutch-Jewish businessman of Spanish descent, had moved. Already at the age of twelve, he came to Paris to study. When he returned to Saint Thomas, he was supposed to work in the family business, but under the influence of the Danish artist Anton Melbye, he decided to focus on art. He accompanied Melbye to Venezuela and in 1855 he moved to Paris.

Artist: Camille Pissarro | Created: 1890.
