A Swimming Race in the Harbour
It is not just a harbour festival: Boudin also painted a swimming race, in which men in bathing caps competed towards the shore while spectators followed the event from rowing boats. The 1858 painting is one of his earliest depictions of sailing and coastal life – made in the town where he himself was born.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Festival in the Harbor of Honfleur from the year 1858. The painting was created by the French artist Eugène Boudin.

In the picture we see several sailboats full of flags, and as the title implies, it is a festival in the harbor of Honfleur . The beautiful town of Honfleur is located in Normandy in northern France and the town's harbor is said to have been created by Vikings.

Boudin was a landscape painter and is considered a forerunner of Impressionism. In 1824, Boudin was born in the Normandy region, which may be a reason why many of his paintings are inspired by and take place in different parts of Normandy.
