A challenge to Columbus
In 1892, Christian Krohg won a competition against nine other artists to paint Leiv Eiriksson’s arrival in Vinland. The commission came from a Norwegian-American association in Chicago, and the painting was shown the following year at the world’s fair that was ostensibly celebrating 400 years since Columbus’s landing – a deliberate alternative account of who arrived first.

The story behind the motif

Canvas print with the captivating painting Leiv Eiriksson discovering America, created in 1895 by Christian Krohg.

Christian Krohg, one of the great Norwegian painters of the realist movement, was a champion of justice and freedom of expression. Krohg painted members of the working class in 19th-century Kristiania (now Oslo) with empathy and a desire for change.

His family expected him to practice law, like his father, but he wanted to be an artist. Krogh succeeded in both. After completing his law studies in Kristiania, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. When many of the younger Norwegian art students traveled from Karlsruhe to Munich for further studies, Krogh followed his teacher, Karl Gussow, to Berlin. His encounter with the metropolis sparked a lifelong focus on social issues.
