The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting Northeaster by Winslow Homer from 1901. Homer was an American artist who mainly painted landscapes. He is best known for his maritime motifs and is considered one of the foremost artists of 20th century America.
The painting is a storm of exceptional violence and duration. Homer first exhibited it in 1895, when it included two men in inclement weather crouching on the rocks under a small column of spray. Although the painting was well received, Homer reworked it into the impactful painting we see here.
In the early 1880s, Homer moved to a small coastal town in Maine where he would create a series of paintings never before seen in American art. After he visited an English fishing village in 1882, his view of his own life and his painting changed. The paintings he created after his visit focused almost exclusively on man's struggle against the elements of nature.
