The story behind the motif
Canvas with the fantastic painting Snow in New York created in 1902 by Robert Henry. In the painting we see a beautifully painted snowy landscape with a horse and carriage flanked on each side by tall buildings.
Henri was an American painter and trained in Paris 1888–1891. There he was influenced by the European realist tradition, especially by Édouard Manet. When he returned to his hometown of Philadelphia, he was convinced that this was how artists should paint.
He worked closely with cartoonists George Luks, Everett Shinn, John Sloan and William Glackens, and together they formed the nucleus of The Eight, later known as the Ashcan School.
