Small Painting, Great Fairy Tale
Despite its fairy-tale grandeur, the original is an oil painting on canvas measuring just 45 × 68 centimetres. This is unusual in Kittelsen’s legacy: he became chiefly famous for his drawings for Norwegian folktales, while this work shows him working in the smaller format of painting.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting The steps were so heavy that Theodor Kittelsen from 1900 trembled .

The motif comes from a Norwegian fairy tale and shows the boy Askeladden running from a troll in the Norwegian mountains. He has set out on an adventure and encounters several magical beings along the way.

Theodor Kittelsen is a Norwegian artist who, like the Swedish John Bauer, is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses. His works are still iconic in many Nordic homes, but even though he is celebrated as a national artist in Norway, he is hardly known outside of Scandinavia.

Delivery time is normally around 5–7 business days within the Nordic countries, as we handcraft our canvas artworks in our factory in Sweden, and the canvas fabric also needs to dry before we stretch it over a wooden frame and ship it to you.

If you order from Norway, your order will be delivered with Fedex; to Sweden and the rest of the world with DHL. Your package is normally delivered to your nearest pickup point!
