Zorn's Nordic Sea Nymph
In Swedish, Zorn called the painting Havsnymf. The long mane of hair and the title borrow something from mythology, but Nasjonalmuseet sees the work as Zorn's Nordic response to the Arcadian bathing scenes painted by Cézanne and Renoir. The setting was Dalarö, where from 1888 he repeatedly returned to bathers and the light of the archipelago.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring the painting Sea Nymph by the iconic Swedish artist Anders Zorn (English official title: In the Skerries ).

On a cliff high above the water stands a naked woman. A fresh, warm summer wind seems to blow through the picture. Zorn skillfully captures the play of light against skin, water and stone.

Anders Zorn was a significant artist in Sweden and was also successful internationally, not least in the USA, where he was hired to paint portraits of presidents, business leaders and society.
