When the Bird Changed Names
Audubon called the species Louisiana Heron when the plate was published in 1827. Today, its English name is Tricolored Heron, *Egretta tricolor*. The same bird has therefore changed names since the image was printed—and the work preserves an older language from the American bird world.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage illustration of a tricolored heron - Louisiana Heron . The illustration was drawn by William Home Lizars and published in John James Audubon's book Birds of America in 1827. In the picture we see, among other things, the text Louisiana Heron and Ardea Ludoviciana - Latin for the name of the species .
