The story behind the motif

Posts with Mother's little Olle, illustrated in 1903 by none other than cult sensation Elsa Beskow, known for her fairy tales and illustrations in classic children's literature.

Mother's little Olle is a famous Swedish children's song, written by Alice Tegnér and published in 1895. The song is based on a real event from the year 1850 when the 1 year and 7 month old boy Jon Ersson met a female bear with two cubs in Dalarna. Jon fed the bear cubs with lingonberries, and the bears lay down to rest with him. The incident became popular after the Swedish writer Wilhelm von Braun wrote a poem about it, which inspired Tegnér to create the poem.

The song's first stanza reads:
Mother's little Olle in the forest walked, roses on his cheek and sunshine in his eyes. The lips small of berries are blue. - Only I didn't have to walk here alone!
