A City Assembled in the Studio
Although the view is directed towards Madison Square, the place is not a real street intersection. George Bellows completed the painting in February 1911, constructing it from impressions of several commercial districts—a deliberately impossible density of a city view, created to capture New York’s pace.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the amazing painting New York 1911 by George Bellows.

George Bellows was an American painter and printmaker. His powerful and realistic paintings depict the first decades of the 20th century in the United States, often in strong colors.

In the picture we see a snowy and populous New York in 1911. From 1907 to 1915, Bellows executed a series of paintings depicting New York in snowy weather, which became experiments in which he developed his strong sense of light and structure. Bellow's urban motifs from New York described the harsh living conditions of the working class, but were also a satire against the upper class.
