The story behind the motif
A man is skiing in a fantastic winter landscape in Norway in April 1929. He stands looking out over the Romsdalshorn mountain. The mountain is located by the scenic Romsdalen.
Scandinavians undoubtedly have a special relationship and fondness for skiing, with strong traditions that go back a long way.
The world's oldest ski was found in a bog in Västerbotten and is dated to an incredible 3,200 BC. Old documentation from the 5th century has also been found about "Skidfinnar" (Sami) who transported themselves quickly and easily across snow-covered landscapes with the help of skis. They are also depicted on runestones from the Viking Age. The first primitive downhill competition was held in 1850 in Oslo and the sport then spread to the rest of Europe and the USA.
