The documented chain of ownership ran from a Sotheby’s auction in London in 1963 to the US Department of Justice and the FBI. In 1986, the painting was transferred from there to the National Gallery of Art – an unusually official route to a museum for a Boudin.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Ship on the Touques from 1888. This amazing painting was created by the French artist Eugène Boudin. He was a landscape painter and is considered a forerunner of Impressionism.

In the picture, Boudin has captured a beautiful light through the sky and the sea. We also see a magnificent ship reflected in the water.

The scene of the painting takes place in Touques , which is a commune in the Normandy region in northern France. It was in the Normandy region that Boudin was born in 1824.
