The lighthouse that blinked by clockwork
When the drawing was copied in 1849, Landsort had been a rotating mirror lighthouse for nine years. Nine rapeseed-oil lamps and nine mirrors were driven by clockwork, producing three flashes during each six-minute revolution. As early as 1870, the short-lived mirror technology was replaced by more modern lens optics.

The story behind the motif
This drawing from 1849 is a sketch of Landsort's Spegel Lighthouse - signed in Stockholm on February 20, 1849, Copied by Carlfr. Carlsson.
However, Landsort's lighthouse was already built in 1689 on the island of Öja in Torö parish, Nynäshamn municipality, Stockholm archipelago - and is Sweden's oldest preserved lighthouse and state building monument. The lighthouse was rebuilt with mirrors in the 1840s.
