The Herring After the Blockade
In spring 1945, when the wartime blockade was lifted, Sweden could once again import salted herring. During the war years, Swedish-caught herring had instead supplied the domestic market, and that same year west-coast fishermen resumed fishing at Fladen Ground—the beginning of a significant herring-processing industry.

The story behind the motif
A poster with a lovely picture from 1945 of a fishing village and wharf somewhere on the west coast, full of barrels of herring being prepared and salted. On the pier, people are standing and working, and in the middle of the picture, a young man with a cart is seen driving a barrel full of salted herring.
