The story behind the motif

An oil painting by Gustaf Cederström of the famous Battle of Narva on November 30, 1700. The battle was early and significant in the Great Northern War. A Swedish auxiliary army under Charles XII defeated a Russian besieging force three to four times its size

The battle ended with a great triumph for Sweden, and the Russian military power was almost completely annihilated.
