A Clue in the Paper
The paper bears a partially preserved watermark: “Y Mill 1901”. This discreet detail places the work after 1901, and the National Gallery of Art therefore dates it to around 1912—midway through Redon’s late period, when he had left his dark lithographs behind for the colour of watercolour and pastel.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Five Butterflies by the French artist Odilon Redon from 1912. The motif shows five colorful butterflies against a natural colored background.

Odilon's real name was Bertrand and he came from Bordeaux, France. As an artist, he is known for his imaginative dreamscapes. He was interested in the reality of fantasy and tried to embody the feelings and dreams he experienced. The result was a strong mix of delightful and slightly more terrifying motifs. His works have inspired Edvard Munch, Fernand Khnopff and Jan Toorop, among others.

If you order from Norway, your order will be delivered with Fedex; to Sweden and the rest of the world with DHL. Your package is normally delivered to your nearest pickup point!
