Once Simply “Standing”
When the National Gallery of Art displayed the drawing in a Rodin exhibition in 1946, it appeared in the catalogue under the considerably vaguer title Standing Figure. Only later did it receive the descriptive title that records the pose more precisely—a small reminder of how museum catalogues also shape a work’s history.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage nude illustration by none other than the famous sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). The motif is called Figure Bending Forward with Right Knee Raised . The original is at the National Gallery of Art.

Auguste Rodin was a French sculptor, draftsman and photographer . He is widely regarded as the father of modern sculpture. Rodin's The Thinker is one of his most famous sculptures.
