In the notebook on 13 October 1904, the wording was harsher: Twain first wrote that the majority is always wrong, then added that one should reform oneself—or at least pause and think. Five years later, he wrote a shorter version as a dedication in a book for Lady Stafford.

Mark Twain, whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American writer and reporter who lived between 1835-1910. His most famous works are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both classics of American literature.
