The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Kōzuke by Utagawa Hiroshige from 1853. The full title of the work is Kōzuke Province: Mount Haruna Under Snow, and it is part of the series Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces.
Hiroshige was one of the foremost landscape artists of ukiyo-e. Here, Mount Haruna appears in a snow-covered winter scene, where a bridge leads across the water toward the buildings at the foot of the mountain. The tall, vertical composition and the distinct color contrasts lend the motif both depth and tranquility.
