The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic color woodblock print Red Fuji, also known as South Wind, Clear Sky, from circa 1830–1832.
The motif is part of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and depicts the mountain in clear weather, tinted in a warm red hue against a blue sky. The concentrated composition and the clean fields of color make the work one of Hokusai’s most renowned motifs.
The series portrays Fuji from different locations and under shifting weather conditions. The deep blue pigment was then a newly introduced color in Japan and became a hallmark of the series.
