From Versailles to the British Museum
Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer worked on decorations for Versailles, Marly and Meudon before following the British ambassador Ralph Montagu to London in 1678. There he painted for Montagu House—the building that became the British Museum in 1754. Flower painting thus moved, quite literally, between two of Europe’s great cultural settings.
