The Royal Images That Became a Coffin
The photographer behind the image, KG Kristoffersson, was given the assignment early on to photograph Gustav V’s 80th birthday in 1938. Only afterwards did he discover that the camera had been loaded with already exposed plates – the result was images of a flower-covered coffin. The mistake did not halt his career; the following year he founded Svenskt Bildreportage.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of an old-fashioned camera from Sweden in the 1940s. A classic bus boy wearing a cap stands and looks into a large-format camera that is set up on a tripod.

Shooting analog with this type of camera was a simple and straightforward way because you saw what you were doing. On this camera, the focus was changed by sliding the front plate with the lens forward or back. You could see the motif on the large mat disc on the back cover.

When you were satisfied with the composition, the cassette with the sheet film was inserted there. The image was then given the same size as the film material. The film was loaded into a cartridge one at a time.
