When the butter was at the bottom
Rice porridge was originally not a Christmas dish for people, but a reward for the farm’s supernatural helper. In folk belief, trouble could follow if the tomte thought the butter was missing—a tale tells how he angrily killed a cow before discovering the pat of butter at the bottom of the dish.
