The story behind the motif
Photograph of Sweden's defense demonstration during World War II, 1942. A military parade at Gärdet, Stockholm. Sweden's government had declared that Sweden was neutral during the Second World War. Despite this, the whole country was in readiness to defend itself against an attack.
In 1942, when the photograph was taken, Sweden was surrounded by German military power. Nazi Germany occupied Norway and Denmark even though the countries, like Sweden, had declared themselves neutral. Norwegian Jews were deported to Poland, of which 900 fled to Sweden. Sweden provided significant humanitarian aid to Norway during the German occupation. The so-called Swedish Norgehjälpen collected a significant amount of money and used it for those in need during the occupation. On March 13, 17 Swedish newspapers wanted to print articles with descriptions of torture from Norwegian prisons. After intense debate, the government came to ban the publication as it was believed that it would provoke the Nazis into an attack.
In 1943, Germany drew up a detailed attack plan against Sweden. Researchers have different opinions about whether Sweden was seriously threatened or not. Nazi Germany had no reason to attack as long as Sweden continued to export ball bearings, iron ore and workshop products to Germany.
