The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Rottrollen by John Bauer from 1917. A child lies in a clearing in the forest surrounded by root-like trolls. The troll almost blends in as part of nature and creates a fairytale image of Scandinavian nature and forest.

When Bauer painted the picture, he imagined the child in the picture as his own son Bengt, "Putte". Iconic John Bauer is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses and he has had a great influence on Nordic folklore and storytelling.
