The story behind the motif
Poster with a vintage photograph of women before a bicycle race in the 1930s. In the picture we see the women getting ready for the starting shot, which is performed by a woman with a piece of cloth.
In the late 1930s, Sweden prohibited by law the dismissal of women due to pregnancy or marriage. Women's increasing labor force participation during this time was interpreted by many, especially during the economic crisis, as a cause of mass unemployment among men. In 1936, a state Women's Work Committee was appointed which made a study of the gender division of labor in the Swedish labor market. The study clearly showed that women were in fact subordinate in the Swedish labor market and therefore did not threaten men's earning opportunities.
