Outside Sport's Inner Circle
When the photograph was taken, boxing still stood outside the inner circle of Swedish sport. The Swedish Boxing Federation had existed since 1919, but it did not become a member of the Swedish Sports Confederation until 1939. The road there ran through a long public dispute over whether the sport was athletics or excessively crude entertainment.
