The story behind the motif
Canvas with a beautiful portrait of Carl von Linné from 1775. The painting is painted by Alexander Roslin, a Swedish portrait painter.
Carl von Linné was a Swedish botanist, physician, geologist and zoologist. He laid the foundation for modern nomenclature in biology and modern systematics, which groups plants and animals. Many of his writings were published in Latin, and so his Latin name is rendered as Carolus Linnæus.
From the 1750s, Roslin was mainly active in Paris. There he won great notoriety and was elected to the French Academy of Arts. His early portraits are done in light and cool colors and show the influence of Jean-Marc Nattier. But during the 1760s, tendencies towards a stricter form and more colorful painting are noticeable, as in this painting by Linnaeus.
