The story behind the motif
Poster with an old map of Gothenburg in 1798. On the upper edge of the map we see the text: Charta över Götheborg : Written by PW Carlberg 1753. The original is kept at Öfver intendens Cont. Cop. similar in 1798.
In the 18th century, Gothenburg became an important center in northern Europe. By the middle of the 18th century, the city had over 10,000 inhabitants. Rich herring catches made Gothenburg the country's largest fishing town.
