The story behind the motif
Poster with an old nautical chart of most parts of Sweden's archipelago from the 19th century.
The map shows the Stockholm archipelago and surrounding parts of eastern Svealand, with many places still recognizable today.
On the mainland there are towns such as Danderyd, Åkersberga, Täby and areas around Vallentuna and Österåker. To the south you can see parts of Södertörn, with names such as Örninge, Hemmingsta and Skriding.
The archipelago contains several well-known islands, such as Värmdö, Vindö, Djurö, Runmarö, Möja, Ljusterö and Svartsö. Smaller resorts such as Ingarö and Siarö are also excellent.
The map shows parts of the landscapes of Uppland (Up Landia Pars) and Södermanland (Suder Manie Landet Pars), and borders the Baltic Sea, named here Mare Balticum.
With its archaic orthography and wealth of detail, the map provides a fascinating insight into how the area was perceived and named in the past.
