The story behind the motif

Winter at Norrbro by Stockholm Palace in the 1860s, a central meeting place for people during this time period. The painting shows contemporary folk life with children playing, horse and sleigh. The latest modern gas light seen in the picture was lit at Norrbro in 1853.

The low building on the right is not there today, but during this time period housed finer shops that catered to wealthy and fashionable customers.
