The story behind the motif
Poster with an old construction drawing for a lighthouse at Falsterbo, located on the southwest coast of Sweden.
Falsterbo lighthouse was used to guide shipping through the Öresund and out towards the Baltic Sea, and it was particularly important to reduce the risk of grounding and other accidents.
The drawing was made in 1822, which was a period when many lighthouses in Sweden and Europe were modernized or rebuilt to become more efficient in guiding ships. Lighthouses were important to the Swedish merchant fleet and international shipping, and helped to improve sea lanes and trade routes during the 19th century.
