The Map Was Made for Taxation
This map of Gothenburg formed part of Gustaf Ljunggren’s nationwide atlas project, made possible by a government inquiry into how the taxation of towns should be calculated. Between 1853 and 1861, he mapped 89 towns at a scale of 1:20,000 – where land and property mattered just as much as the streets.
