The story behind the motif
A fantastic canvas painting with a portrait of Gustav III - king of Sweden from 1771 to 1792. The painting is painted by Lorens Pasch the younger, a Swedish artist, professor and director at the Art Academy from 1773.
Gustav III was an influential monarch who worked to modernize Sweden and strengthen the royal power. Gustav III introduced several reforms, including a ban on torture and the abolition of the nobility's right to impose the death penalty. He was also a great promoter of art and culture, and founded, among other things, the Royal Opera in Stockholm.
Gustav III was also known for his involvement in political conflicts in Europe and led several military campaigns, including against Russia. He was murdered in 1792 by a group of conspirators and succeeded by his son Gustav IV Adolf.
Lorens Pasch was one of the most respected portrait painters in Sweden during the Gustavian period. Through his work as a teacher, he gained great influence for the development of art in Sweden.
