When Shopping Became Theatre
When NK opened on Hamngatan in 1915, it was conceived as a commercial and cultural theatre where customers could wander among the goods themselves—a novelty at a time when shop assistants often fetched everything from behind the counter. The department store also attracted visitors with Stockholm’s first escalator.
