The story behind the motif
Poster with a beautiful poster from 1890 by Jules Chéret. The poster is called La Diaphane and is a French advertising poster for a face powder.
In the picture we can see an elegant woman holding a small powder box. V i also sees the name Sarah Bernhardt, who was a French actress and one of the biggest celebrities of her time.
Bernhardt was born in the Latin Quarter of Paris as the daughter of the Dutch milliner and courtesan Julie Bernard, the father was unknown. She grew up in a girls' boarding school and in a convent, and she dreamed of becoming a nun when she grew up. One of her mother's influential lovers, Duke Charles de Morny, wanted her to become an actor instead and saw to it that she entered the Conservatoire de Paris already at the age of 15. The duke was the half-brother of Napoleon III.
