The story behind the motif
A gymnastics class for women at the beginning of the 20th century. Gymnastics was the first organized sport for women and grew strongly in the latter part of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Where male gymnastics was more focused on strength and explosiveness, female gymnastics was focused on agility and "grace".
The most famous form of female gymnastics was the so-called "housewife gymnastics" which was very popular in the 1940s. The purpose of the training was to facilitate the chores that housewives performed in the homes.
