44 Sheets for the Fairway
In 1890, the image appeared in Victor Carlson’s lavish reference work on maritime signals and markings. The book comprised 43 colour plates and a fold-out map of the approach to Gothenburg—an attempt to gather the navigational aids of the North Sea and Baltic in a single work.

The story behind the motif
Poster with a graphic overview of sea marks and navigational structures along the coasts of Sweden, as well as parts of Norway from the year 1890.
The drawing is divided into sections representing different regions, including Gotland, Blekinge, the coast of Halland, the west coast, and the southern coast of Norway.
Each box contains illustrations of specific nautical landmarks, such as lighthouses, hake, or other structures that were used to help mariners navigate safely. They are marked with names that indicate their geographical location, for example Marstrand, Aspö, and Sälö.
This image is one of 44 illustrations showing maritime signaling systems in and around the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Originally published in the work "Maritime Telegraph Systems, Buoys, Beacons, Tidal Signals ptr." by Victor Carlson – captain in the Swedish merchant navy.
Frame not included.
Please note that the images are cropped slightly differently depending on the size you choose. Read more about image and image quality here: FAQ.
