Two Coats of Arms Became One
At Gustav Vasa’s funeral procession in 1560, Östergötland was represented by two coats of arms: one for Västanstång, west of the Stångån, and one for Östanstång, east of the river. Only in 1884 were they merged into the province’s distinctive heraldic animal—a griffin that retained the dragon’s wings and tail.
