The story behind the motif
Riddarhustorget in Gamla Stan, Stockholm sometime between 1904-1916. In the background we see Riddarholm church.
Riddarholm Church was built in the 1280s and thus constitutes Stockholm's oldest preserved building, and the only preserved medieval monastery church.
Riddarhustorget's former names were Riddare Huss platzen (1641) and Riddarehus Torget (1662). It was here that Marie Antoinette's great love, Reich Marshal Axel von Fersen, died after an attack by an angry mob in 1810. He had been accused of having poisoned the Swedish Crown Prince Karl August.
