The story behind the motif

Poster with a historic illustration of the Savolax provincial coat of arms. The motif shows a richly ornamented heraldic panel with two lions, Sweden’s Three Crowns, helmets, and banners — an expressive composition with a strong connection to Swedish and Finnish history.

Savolax, or Savo in Finnish, is a historic province in eastern Finland that belonged to Sweden until 1809. The original coat of arms is believed to have been created in the 16th century, commissioned by King Erik XIV. At the very bottom of the motif appears the Latin text “Insigne Principale Regni Sueciæ,” roughly “the foremost emblem of the Kingdom of Sweden.”
