The story behind the motif
In this painting from the late 19th century by Carl Johan Billmark, the Skeppsbron in Stockholm is depicted. Skeppsbron is located in Gamla Stan and was one of the main traffic routes for a long time and is also Stockholm's oldest wharf.
Already in the early 17th century, the quay was a port for larger ships and a bustling trading post. Skeppsbron continued to be Stockholm's most important quay during the 18th century. In the late 1800s, the quay lost its status as a trading post, but continued to be an important port for passenger ships right into the late 1900s.
