The story behind the motif
Poster featuring the coat of arms of Småland, created during the second half of the 17th century by Erik Dahlbergh — one of the most distinguished image-makers of Sweden’s Age of Greatness.
The illustration depicts the arms of the Duchy of Småland: a rampant lion holding a crossbow, crowned by a floating ducal coronet. At the bottom of the image appears the Latin title “Insigne Ducatus Smolandiae”, which roughly means “the arms of the Duchy of Småland.” The motif is rendered as an early copper engraving, with mountains and clouds in the background that enhance the image’s historical and ceremonial character.
Frame not included.
